ITL - Internet Teaching Laboratory
Introduction
This manual has two primary goals:
- Explanation of features of the lab that are specific to the lab and are not explained elsewhere.
For example, the IP address conventions for the private network in the lab are explained in the manual,
but there is no discussion on how to use basic linux commands.
- Explanation of features of the lab that might be of use to a student who has no prior experience
with networking. Features that would be appropriate to a more advanced student are not described and
for these the student is encouraged to refer to the documentation.
For example, the mechanism for assigning ports on a switch to vlans is described, since this
might be used in an exercise in an introductory networking course. The mechanism for using VTP to
distribute vlan information automatically to connected switches is not described since this is
unlikely to be of use in an introductory course. Of course, different people might have
different perspectives on what constitutes essential material for
an introductory student.
Each brand of device is discussed separately, so if you choose not
to use a particular brand you can skip over its description.
However, the following sections of the manual should be read first
by everyone who plans to use the lab:
- Overview of the Lab
- Computers
- Useful Computer Applications
- ethereal (gui protocl analyzer)
- Management
- Notation Conventions
- (sections pertaining to devices you plan to use)
- Physical Layer
- Overview and Precautions
- (sections pertaining to media you plan to use)
